If you are interested in pursuing a career as an illustrator, this class will teach you how to achieve this. You will learn about the wide range of markets that use illustration. Examples of work done for magazines, publishing companies, design firms, newspapers, fashion houses, store windows and advertising campaigns will be given. You will learn how to promote yourself and find work as an illustrator.
This course is suitable for anyone who would like to learn about the profession of commercial illustration or just improve their drawing skills. Beginners to advanced students are all welcome.
Some experience of drawing and illustration is an advantage, but beginners are very welcome.
You should know how to fulfil an illustration brief from understanding the assignment, to interpreting this visually. Illustration is a visual means of depicting a story, an article, an advertising campaign or a book cover, as examples. You will learn how to make sketches and illustrate final art. You will also learn about techniques and well-known illustrators.
Each week you will be given a job to do. You will read an assignment, gather reference, create sketches and make final art. Trisha will encourage each student to try a wide range of artist mediums. Techniques with be demonstrated in class and you will see lots of examples to assist you. You will also learn how to find work as an illustrator and how to promote yourself.
Continued sketching in a sketch book and trying different techniques at home.
One to one verbal feedback, group discussion and evaluation, progress reported on ILP. The classroom assignments will be good examples of your understanding of briefs and your ability to depict what has been asked of you.
Further study at more advanced level in this subject to develop technique. Portfolio Preparation courses, Foundation courses in FE/HE. Approaching art directors and finding work as an illustrator.
Bring pencils to the first session. You will need to bring a sketchbook. Basic paper and art supplies are available but be advised by the tutor for best sources to purchase any other materials.

Trisha Krauss is a published children's book illustrator and all round creative. Trisha also has lots of knowledge about selling work and getting publish. Her rich use of patterns in her illustrations have led to a career in textile design.
