What will the course Cover?
This course will cover the basic skills of cookery and students will learn simple recipes for starters, main courses, vegetables and puddings, cakes and biscuits. You will build a portfolio of recipes for home cooking and entertaining. Emphasis will be made on safety in the kitchen and working independently as well as with others.
Who is this course for?
Learners with little or no experience (including learners with learning or other disabilities) who would like to learn basic cooking skills and health & safety in the kitchen.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
No previous experience is necessary just an enthusiasm to learn about kitchen skills and how to cook.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
• Plan and prepare nutritious 3-course meals and snacks using a variety of cooking and food preparation methods. • Develop a portfolio of recipes for home use. • Understand and put into practice health & safety regulations when working in a kitchen and with food.
How is the course organised?
There will be demonstration of each new technique. You will have a choice of recipes for 2 dishes including starters, main courses and desserts each week from which you will select one or two recipes to make in class. You will be supported to make your dishes by the tutor.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
Practice of skills by cooking recipes at home (if possible) Shopping for ingredients.

Join another course within the curriculum to continue to build on skills learnt and develop more confidence.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
The first week ingredients will be provided, thereafter, learners will be given lists of ingredients to bring for the following weeks. Stout shoes to be worn and hair tied back or covered.
What support is available?
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages.
