What will the course Cover?

This ten-week course is an introduction to the basic techniques for hand building in the ceramic’s studio. You will explore three fundamental pottery techniques - pinching, slabbing and coiling, while learning to shape, join and refine clay confidently. You will also get the opportunity to experiment with surface decoration, including dipping glazing, colour slips and underglazing. You will be guided in the safe and effective use of the specialist ceramic studio.

Who is this course for?

This is course is for complete beginners or learners with a little experience in hand building techniques.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

This is a beginner level course. The tutor will guide everyone through each basic step to construct forms in clay. No previous knowledge of ceramics is necessary.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

● Identify the different characteristics between clays (stoneware, earthenware and porcelain). ● Use hand-building techniques e.g. coiling, pinching and slab building. ● Construct a coiled pot using coiling techniques. ● Prepare glazes safely to decorate your pots. ● Demonstrate an understanding of Health & Safety criteria as applied in a ceramic studio.

How is the course organised?

This is a practical course in a studio environment. You will be taught in a group and through individual tutoring. There will be tutor demonstrations of techniques, presentations and group discussions.

How will my progress be assessed?

Through tutor feedback, one-to-one and in group discussions. Progress will be recorded on an Individual Learning Plan.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

You could progress to further ceramics courses to expand your skills, including, Pottery: Hand Building and Surface Decoration, Pottery: Throwing for Beginners or Pottery – all levels.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Clay is charged by weight (per kilo) to cover materials and firing costs. Wear solid footwear i.e. no sandals or open footwear and clothes suitable for working in the workshop.

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. The pottery tutor for this course has a BA and Masters in Ceramic Design and has a teaching qualification. Also has extensive teaching experience in adult education setting.
