Introductory projects to give learners a good grounding in pottery techniques including hand building, decorating and glazing plus more.
This is a fully inclusive basic art course that covers a variety of topics and is suitable for people who are new to the subject and want to work at a slower pace or those with moderate learning difficulties and disabilities.
No previous experience is necessary. The course is designed for beginners.
Be able to demonstrate hand building skills such as: coiling, pinching, slabbing and press moulding. Also to explore a range of decorative techniques such as Majolica, slip decoration and oxides. Be able to recognise the difference between stoneware and earthenware glazes and apply them to create a finished piece of work. Identify what you have done well and not so well and what you can do to improve. Demonstrate an understanding of Health & Safety as applied in a pottery.
Practical workshop sessions with help from the tutor, in which a range of work will be produced throughout the course. You will also be able to work on your own, and to contribute to group discussion.
Take notice of pottery you see in shops, museums and look for ideas to use in your designs.
One to one verbal feedback, group discussion and evaluation and written progress recorded on your own Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal.

Clay is charged per pound of clay to cover materials and firing costs. make sure to wear an apron and stout shoes.
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
