You will make studies from still-life to develop your skills of composition, draughtsmanship and modelling. We will also investigate the work of well known artists to inform the work produced.
All people who wish to develop their drawing skills from observation of mainly still-life set ups, some portraiture and some landscape (later part of Summer Term, weather permitting)
Some experience however long ago, would be helpful, though not essential. Enthusiasm is very important, as is the willingness to achieve your own learning goals
Recognise the correct tonal values and their relationships in still-life arrangements. Illustrate a clear understanding of proportions in drawings and paintings produced, using measurement as a tool to train the eye. Use horizontals and verticals to estimate angles and negative spaces. Specify the various styles of making images from the work of 3 artists and at least 3 different periods of history. Use colour theory to understand colour mixing, placing and matching Use the principals of structural composition Make a range of drawings and simple paintings which clearly express form and shape.
Following a short session to introduce the topic the session is a practical one.The tutor will then support one to one with some group feedback. THIS COURSE CAN ALSO BE ACCESSED ONLINE, ASK YOUR TUTOR FOR DETAILS.
Gallery and museum visits are recommended as are looking at art books in libraries and visiting websites. Drawing practise is advised.
One to one verbal feedback, group discussion and evaluation, written progress and assessment will be recorded on your Individual Learning Plan and in your Learning Journal. Also discussion of each project and its relevance. At the end of term we will evaluate each learner’s work as a whole and discuss individual development
Continue with this course or go on to life drawing or painting courses. You could use the work created to help compile a portfolio to help with an application to FE or HE
Cartridge and some other paper and charcoal are available in class. Students should provide their own fixative, masking tape, sketch books and additional drawing materials as necessary.
