What will the course Cover?
Through set projects you will learn a range of stone setting techniques and skills while working with metal. You will learn how to set a cabochon stone using cold connection methods and traditional bezel making techniques. You will use glass and cabochon gemstones to produce a unique pendant and ring by the end of the course.
Who is this course for?
This beginner level course is ideal for anyone new to jewellery making, as well as those with some experience who want to build their technical skills specifically in stone setting.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
No previous stone setting experience is required. This course is suitable for beginners as well as those who want to further develop their jewellery making skills. It also provides a solid foundation for learners considering the Level 2 Award in Creative Craft (Jewellery), offering the opportunity to gain essential skills in piercing, soldering, filing and polishing metal, along with an understanding of basic jewellery making techniques, technology, and terminology.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
• Apply a range of stone setting techniques while working confidently with metal. • Set a cabochon stone using cold connection methods. • Create a traditional bezel setting for cabochon stones. • Use both glass and cabochon gemstones to design and produce a unique pendant and ring. • Demonstrate improved technical skill and accuracy in basic jewellery making processes.
How is the course organised?
This practical course focuses on learning through making. You will learn through hands-on demonstrations, group work and tutor guidance and support.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
Design work, library and internet research, sketchbook drawings will help you get the most out of the course.
How will my progress be assessed?
Progress is assessed informally through one-to-one discussions with the tutor, group feedback, and self-reflection, which may be recorded in your sketchbook or Individual Learning Plan (ILP).
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
You may continue in similar courses to further develop your skills, including Jewellery foe Beginners, Jewellery – intermediate or Jewellery – all levels. You also may want to consider Level 2 Award/Certificate in Creative Craft (Jewellery).
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
The workshop is fully equipped with hand tools and machinery. Consumables such as saw blades, emery paper, solder, and small amounts of base metals are available. The tutor can assist with sourcing and ordering.
What support is available?
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
