You will be introduced to the fundamentals of digital photography and discover how to use the camera to unlock your creative potential. We will explore key camera controls and the terminology will be explained, including exposure, shutter speed, aperture, and depth of field. A variety of techniques that include the freezing of movement and the capture of a spontaneous scene will be examined in this practical course. Learners will be introduced to a variety of photographic styles and trends, as well as how to produce well-crafted and original photographs.
All aspiring photographers from complete beginners to more competent image makers who wish to learn everything from the basic camera skills, to filling any gaps in knowledge and up to the more sophisticated techniques used by professionals.
Minimal skills in photography and enthusiasm. You will need to bring your own digital camera-compact, bridge or SLR.
You will be able to recognise and use the key controls on a camera. • Identify different types of lenses and how and when to use them. • If you already have an understanding of the key controls, this knowledge base will be refined and expanded upon. • Learners will be able to demonstrate the ability to take photographs of a variety of subjects in the home and on location and apply a range of composition rules to the photographs produced that will both improve them and appeal to other viewers. • You will be able to develop the ability to critically evaluate photographs. • Move away from ‘Automatic Mode’.
Most sessions will take place in the classroom including group and individual practical teaching. Learners with a wider knowledge base will be set more complex and challenging tasks. Learners will be taken on location shoots within the local area and further afield. Group visits to exhibitions will be organised and talks with relevant photographic images and specific DVDs will be included.
Learners will be encouraged to practice techniques explored in class. Various tasks and projects will be set to consolidate the topics studied. Learners will also be directed to relevant photographic exhibitions, a variety of photographic publications and websites that will help in building up a wider knowledge base and assist in to providing inspiration.
Continual assessment and feedback from your tutor.
Continue with lessons for as long as you wish with the aim of building confidence, understanding and to expand your individual creative capabilities. Produce a portfolio of images for personal use and where appropriate, to use for entry to a higher-level course in further education.
Each session will require you to bring: a camera; compact, bridge, compact system, DSLR or other. Advice on purchasing a new, second-hand camera, or an upgrade can be provided by your tutor. Additional items: lenses, memory card, battery, instruction manual, a USB memory stick and a note pad. Entry fee for possible exhibition visits
