What will the course Cover?
This course provides a structured introduction to the principles and techniques of photography. You will begin by exploring camera basics, gaining an understanding of key settings such as shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focus, and lighting. The course also introduces compositional techniques to help enhance the visual impact of images. You will develop skills in digital image editing using Adobe Lightroom, to refine and enhance your photographs. A range of photographic styles will be explored, including portraiture, studio, and location photography, while you will also gain an understanding of legal and ethical responsibilities. You will build a portfolio that showcases your skills and progress to support your progression into employment or level 2.
Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for learners who are keen to explore the fundamentals of photography. It introduces basic photographic processes and techniques, including image composition and manipulation. You will gain a strong foundation for progression into further study or entry-level employment in the creative industries.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
• Operate a camera correctly and safely to capture correctly exposed and well composed images. • Manage workflow and enhance images using Adobe Lightroom. • Apply compositional principles to create visually effective photographs. • Plan, develop, and present a personal photography portfolio. • Critically review and evaluate the quality of their own photographic work. • Demonstrate an understanding of the legal and ethical considerations that apply to photography.
How is the course organised?
The course combines hands-on practical sessions with guided instruction and reflective learning. Assessment is portfolio-based, with learners presenting a selection of their work alongside written reflections and evaluations. Google Classroom is used as a Virtual Learning Environment on this course. When you log on you will be able to access course material including, presentations, and handouts. You will be given joining details and support, at the beginning of the course.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
You may be set additional tasks to complete at home. Your tutor will discuss these with you in a session when required.
How will my progress be assessed?
You will receive regular feedback through individual tutorials, group discussions, and targeted tasks. Your progress will be tracked using an individual learning plan, project records (written and photographic). Formal assessments will occur throughout the course, with both oral and written feedback. You will also be expected to record your work and progress in both digital and non-digital formats.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
Learners who achieve this qualification can progress to a Level 2 Certificate in Photography.
What support is available?
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
