If you are a beginner you will acquire basic woodwork skills and techniques before embarking on your own personal project. Using a variety of joints and construction methods, hand and power tools you will produce and execute your own design.
People who have an interest in woodwork.
No previous woodwork skills required, ability to follow verbal instructions.
Identify and select woodworking hand tools. Apply Health and Safety proceedures in a wood workshop. Use hand and power tools safely and competently. Effectively sharpen chisels and planes. Produce basic technical drawings. Identify a selection of hard and soft woods. Mark out and cut joints. Construct a halving joint. Construct a housing joint. Construct a dovetail joint Construct a bridle joint Construct a mortice and tenon joint. Evaluate projects completed.
Group and individual demonstration and instruction, discussion, project work, set exercises, question and answer sessions.
Study of handouts. Project idea development, preparation of project drawings and sourcing of materials.
Feed back from tutor on project work and progress and through the use of your Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal.
Higher level woodwork, cabinet making course or other related woodwork courses - e.g. restoration or picture framing.
Cost of materials for personal project. Pencil and paper. Apron if desired.
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
