Using heat-fixed textile pigment and block printing inks, you will be experimenting with various hand painting and block printing techniques on natural fabrics. You will develop your ideas in a sketch book and use collected and provided forms of visual reference as inspiration. Students will learn how to make their own lino blocks and to create basic repeat patterns. We will work as a group around a large table and the tutor will demonstrate different techniques. You will come away from this workshop with an array of samples such as cloth bags, tea towels, linen napkins and printed fabric.
This course is for anyone who would like to develop skills and learn how to use pigment on fabric. It is a course for beginners or anyone who would like to continue practicing painting and printing on cloth in a large art studio.
No previous knowledge is necessary.
- Use of a sketch book to research and develop ideas. - Create samples using hand painting, stencils and block prints. - Use of heat setting pigment on cloth. - Learn about layering colours, mixing colours and designing pattern.
The tutor will give group demonstrations of techniques at the start of each session. Around a large table, students will be encouraged to experiment with the technique and will be given hand-outs with clear instructions of each new skill. You will see real samples of other textile designers work and printed examples will be show in the hand-outs.
Outside of class you will be encouraged to collect visuals that inspire you and make sketches in your sketch books.
Feedback from the tutor. Group discussions and evaluations. Progress reported on ILP (Individual Learning Plan).
Further study in this subject. Creating products to sell. Making things for your home or to give as gifts
Basic supplies such as pigment, silkscreens, paper for stencils and masking tape are provided. You will need a sketch book, drawing materials, paint brushes and natural fabrics such as linen or basic cotton. The textile pigment is used on cotton only and synthetic fabric is not an option. The tutor will provide you with a list of fabric stores in Shepherd’s Bush Market and places where you can order cotton bags if you are interested.
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
