What will the course Cover?
This course will cover the tools, materials and methods used in modern and traditional upholstery. You will learn the use of specialist tools like the magnetic hammer, mallet, ripping chisels and webbing stretchers. You will develop practical skills such as webbing, tacking, different types of stitches used in a pad, accurate measuring and cutting of fabrics, pattern placement, and machine sewing - including the making of piping and finishing techniques. To support your learning, you will explore examples of traditional and contemporary upholstery, helping you develop your own ideas and techniques. Through a set project, you will plan, develop and complete a finished upholstered piece, while following essential health and safety procedures.
Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for beginners and those with some creative craft experience who want to explore upholstery. It serves as an introduction to working with specialist techniques and a is foundation for further study in this specialist area.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
No prior experience of upholstery is required, but an Entry Level qualification or experience with craft and art materials would be an advantage. Literacy and numeracy at an appropriate level is required. When booking and interview for this course, select the topic, Craft - Level 1 Award in Upholstery.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
You will gain an in-depth introduction to upholstery, enabling you to calculate and prepare materials accurately for specific projects. You will be confident working with both traditional and modern techniques, using specialist tools and equipment safely and effectively. Through planning and completing set projects, you will explore and apply a range of upholstery methods, while documenting your design process and technical development. You will also reflect on historical and contemporary practices to inform your own work. Overall, you will be able to work independently and safely in a workshop environment.

Demonstrations, practical tasks, presentations, individual and group discussions and formal feedback.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
You may be set additional tasks to complete at home. Your tutor will discuss these with you in a session when required. Research visits to exhibitions, museums, libraries, and online resources are recommended.
How will my progress be assessed?
You will receive regular feedback through individual tutorials, group discussions, and targeted tasks. Your progress will be tracked using an individual learning plan, project records (written and photographic), and sketchbooks. Formal assessments will occur throughout the course, with both oral and written feedback. You will also be expected to record your work and progress in both digital and non-digital formats.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
Learners who achieve this qualification can progress to a Level 2 Award in Creative Craft qualification in Creative Craft in Upholstery.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
Basic upholstery materials will be supplied to complete the course. You will need to supply your notepad, pen and a camera and purchase any additional, specialised materials you require beyond what is available in the workshop. Wear sturdy shoes in the workshop.
What support is available?
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Monica qualified as an architect in Mexico. She has completed the three stages of the renowned Association of Master Upholsters and Soft Furnishings (AMUSF) diploma. With expertise in both traditional and modern techniques, she supports learners of all levels in developing practical skills and confidence. For the last four years, she has taught at the Macbeth Centre in Hammersmith, where she combines a passion for craftsmanship with a strong design sensibility.
