This course will cover the production methods, techniques, and materials used in both traditional and modern upholstery. You will develop practical skills such as tacking, webbing, accurate measuring and cutting of fabric, inserting bridle ties, pattern placement, and machine sewing - including piping and finishing techniques. You will also learn to use specialist tools like the magnetic hammer and large bayonet curved needle. To support your learning, you’ll explore examples of traditional and contemporary upholstery, helping you develop your own ideas and techniques. Through set projects, you will plan and produce a drop-in seat pad and a capped footstool, all while following essential health and safety procedures.
This course is ideal for beginners and those with some creative craft experience who want to explore upholstery. It serves as an introduction to working with specialist techniques and a is foundation for further study in this specialist area.
No prior experience of upholstery is required, but an Entry Level qualification or experience with craft and art materials would be an advantage. Literacy and numeracy at an appropriate level is required. Craft (NCFE courses) – select this topic when booking an interview for this course.
You will gain an in-depth introduction to upholstery, enabling you to calculate and prepare materials accurately for specific projects. You will be confident working with both traditional and modern techniques, using specialist tools and equipment safely and effectively. Through planning and completing set projects, you will explore and apply a range of upholstery methods, while documenting your design process and technical development. You will also reflect on historical and contemporary practices to inform your own work. Overall, you will be able to work independently and safely in a workshop environment.
Demonstrations, practical tasks, presentations, individual and group discussions and formal feedback. Google Classroom is used as a Virtual Learning Environment on this course. When you log on you will be able to access course material including, presentations, and handouts. You will be given joining details and support, at the beginning of the course.
You may be set additional tasks to complete at home. Your tutor will discuss these with you in a session when required. Research visits to exhibitions, museums, libraries, and online resources are recommended.
You will receive regular feedback through individual tutorials, group discussions, and targeted tasks. Your progress will be tracked using an individual learning plan, project records (written and photographic), and sketchbooks. Formal assessments will occur throughout the course, with both oral and written feedback. You will also be expected to record your work and progress in both digital and non-digital formats.
Learners who achieve this qualification can progress to a Level 2 Award in Creative Craft qualification in Creative Craft in Upholstery.
Basic upholstery materials will be supplied to complete the course. You will need to supply your notepad, pen and a camera and purchase any additional, specialised materials you require beyond what is available in the workshop. Wear sturdy shoes in the workshop.
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
