What will the course Cover?

This course offers an exploration of intermediate upholstery techniques, enabling you to build on your existing skills with greater confidence and precision. You will learn how to safely use a range of professional tools and work with a variety of traditional and modern materials. The course covers key processes such as furniture stripping and preparation, webbing, padding and shaping, as well as a range of covering methods and decorative finishing techniques. Alongside practical skills, you will develop an understanding of design principles, fabric selection and how to approach creative challenges. Through guided and independent projects, you will learn how to plan, manage, and complete upholstery work from initial concept through to a high-quality finished piece, building both your technical ability and creative confidence. A strong focus is placed on planning and evaluating your work. You will document the complete process - recording challenges, solutions and areas for improvement - while preparing and maintaining a safe working environment throughout.

Who is this course for?

This course is intended for learners who have completed the Level 1 Award in Creative Crafts, Upholstery pathway or who have equivalent experience. It is ideal for those wishing to extend their upholstery skills and technical abilities and produce work to a higher standard.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

Completion of the Upholstery pathway, Level 1 Award in Creative Crafts or similar experience is recommended. Literacy and numeracy at an appropriate level are required for written project work, research and evaluation.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

By completing the Level 2 Award you will be able to apply a range of intermediate upholstery techniques with confidence and accuracy, using specialist tools and materials safely and effectively. You will be able to strip and prepare furniture, build up structures using appropriate methods such as webbing and padding, and carry out professional covering and finishing techniques. You will also develop the ability to plan and manage your own upholstery projects from concept through to completion, demonstrating creativity, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of design. Through this, you will produce a finished piece that reflects both your technical skills and creative approach. Evaluate your work critically, identifying issues, solutions and areas for future improvement. Work with increasing independence and professionalism in the craft workshop.

How is the course organised?

Teaching includes demonstrations, practical studio sessions, presentations, guided research, group critiques and formal feedback. What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Additional tasks may be set to help you refine skills or progress your project. This may involve research, developing design ideas and maintaining project records. You are also encouraged to visit exhibitions, museums and use online resources for inspiration.

How will my progress be assessed?

Assessment is continuous and includes individual tutorials and group critiques as well as targeted tasks linked to Level 2 units. Formal assessments will occur for the course units, with both oral and written feedback. You will use documentation such as sketchbooks, written reflections and photographic evidence. You will be expected to record your work and progress in both digital and non-digital formats, upload online and produce a digital portfolio for assessment. The qualification is internally assessed and externally quality assured through a portfolio of evidence, with no formal exams.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

This course also provides a strong foundation for progressing to a Level 3 qualification in a creative subject. You will develop practical craft techniques alongside transferable creative skills relevant to careers in crafts, handmade product businesses, community arts, retail, and freelance creative work. Learners will also build confidence, creativity, and a portfolio of work to support further education, training, or employment opportunities within the creative industries.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Basic upholstery materials will be supplied to complete the course. You will need to supply your notepad, pen and a camera and purchase any additional, specialised materials you require beyond what is available in the workshop. Wear sturdy shoes in the workshop.

Tutor - Monica Delgado

Monica qualified as an architect in Mexico. She has completed the three stages of the renowned Association of Master Upholsters and Soft Furnishings (AMUSF) diploma. With expertise in both traditional and modern techniques, she supports learners of all levels in developing practical skills and confidence. For the last four years, she has taught at the Macbeth Centre in Hammersmith, where she combines a passion for craftsmanship with a strong design sensibility.
