You will learn different baking skills, food hygiene techniques, how to buy ingredients efficiently and how to manage the kitchen space.
You will need an interview to join this course which is aimed at learners who have some experience of, or are new to, baking, cake making and food hygiene. By the end of the course, you will be able to confidently create a range of popular baked items and maintain hygiene in the kitchen. If successful, your work will lead to the L1 Home Cooking Award.
Experience is not required but you do need the motivation to learn practical skills in the kitchen, the ability to read a recipe, and a willingness to develop the skills to cook, manage food safety, equipment and time. For beginner and more experienced students.
You will learn basic baking skills and be able to produce a number of baked goodies, such as cakes, bread and biscuits.
At the start of each session, the tutor will explain the recipe, the ingredients and the hygiene considerations. There will be classroom discussion followed by practical activities preparing the baked products chosen. A recipe sheet will be provided so you can practice at home.
Practice skills gained by cooking recipes at home. Continuously build your confidence through hands-on learning at home and elsewhere. Reflect on the benefits to you and others, such as friends and family, of your new abilities. Further your skills and broaden your cooking knowledge, by joining another course within our Food Science curriculum.
Preparation of ingredients. Baking of bread, biscuits, cakes, etc. Tutor observation. Q&A. Group discussion. Photographs of finished products. Continuous assessment for L1 Food Hygiene. Assessment by the tutor. Question and answer sessions.
In future, you may be able to progress to a L1 or L2 Award in Home Cooking Skills course or other courses within our curriculum or elsewhere to continue building the skills you have learnt and develop more confidence.
Instead of a materials fee, you are asked to buy and provide ingredients each week, based on the tutor's plans. Please wear stout shoes and hair tied back or covered in the kitchen. Please bring your own apron and a large lidded, heat-proof container suited to biscuits and cakes in which to take home your bakery products. Some dishes will be eaten in class. Please bring pen and paper for note taking. Learners will learn to clean utensils, surfaces and equipment.
Literacy, numeracy and ESOL skills are available in our Skills for Life course – please ask. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available from the guide and from teaching or reception staff. Specialist aids are also available such as hearing loops, wheelchair friendly surfaces.
