This short course will cover safeguarding and protection in education and childcare settings, the role of the education and childcare practitioner in safeguarding children and learners, the roles and responsibilities of a mentor and the importance of pastoral care. It will detail the relevant legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding children and young people, and how to respond to evidence or concerns that a child or young person has been abused or harmed.
This qualification is designed for any member of staff, parent, governor, childminder, volunteer or visitor that works with, or has access to, children and learners. This unit goes into detail on a broad range of Safeguarding issues and approaches.
Basic computer skills, good reading at Level 2.
The purpose of this qualification is to give learners the knowledge and understanding of their legal responsibility to safeguard and protect the welfare of children and learners. You will be able to identify signs of the different types of abuse, and know and identify lines of reporting safeguarding issues. You will have a good understanding of current legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures within Home Nations affecting the safeguarding of children and young people.
Face to face teaching supported by an online course and short assignment.
To gain the maximum benefit, you should read recommended books and websites, and practice the topics covered during the class each week – the more you practice, the faster your skills will improve. Computer access is available at Study Support sessions at Macbeth centre, or at your local library.
Informal feedback and tasks will help you decide what else you need to learn or practise. You will submit a short assignment, which must be word processed.
Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to a supplementary or higher-level qualification, for example: Level 2 or 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools; Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools, and many other Care related qualifications. Ask your course tutor for advice on next steps.
