Who is this course for?
It would suit learners who are looking to develop leadership and specialist skills for use in their current role, or in preparation to take on a specialist role such as a Special Educational Needs Coordinator or a Physical Activity and Nutrition Coordinator. It would also suit learners who want to progress to further learning to take on a position of leadership within the setting
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
To gain entry to this course, you must attend an interview, and complete a skills assessment. Check our website at hfals.ac.uk or call 020 8753 3600 for details. You must have a Level 3 Teaching Assistant or Childcare qualification. You must be able to demonstrate evidence of literacy and numeracy skills at Level 2 This is a knowledge-only qualification, however you must be in a school environment
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
At the end of the course it is expected that you will have a clear overview of the following topics: enabling individuals to learn promoting health and wellbeing special educational needs working with families implementing change
How is the course organised?
Alongside classroom teaching, activities and discussions, you will have 1-1 Tutorial sessions and Professional discussions. You will actively take part in class discussions, roleplay and groupwork and research activities.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
To gain the maximum benefit, you should read recommended books and websites, and review the topics covered during the class each week. You should research unit topics, and work on sections of your assignments after each class session. Computer access is available at Study Support sessions at Macbeth Centre. Candidates will be expected to undertake additional study in their own time and complete assignments, including weekly Learning Journals. Homework will be set by your tutor and assignments as set by NCFEwill need to be researched and submitted by deadline dates as set by the tutor. Set aside a minimum of 6 hours a week for study and assignments.
How will my progress be assessed?
To achieve the Award the learner must complete ALL the mandatory units. This qualification will be internally assessed using a range of methods, which could include written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams, or setting up an information board. A portfolio task has to be completed for all of the units. The portfolio tasks are set by NCFE and internally marked. Each learner is assigned an assessor, who will work with the learner to achieve the qualification. This will take place at the centre and the workplace. Your assignments will also be marked and feedback given to you. You will complete a learning journal at the end of every teaching session. You will also have a 1-1 Tutorial session and professional discussions with both your course tutor and assessor. As a group you will have a class meeting once a term where you will be able to contribute to how effective the learning methods being used are and add suggestions about what can be improved.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
This qualification may be used alongside other qualifications to progress onto higher education Learners may progress within the workforce in the following job roles and responsibilities: • Higher Level Practitioner/Teaching Assistant • internal progression at a higher level, including those with management responsibilities • leadership, mentoring, supervision and management opportunities. Progression routes will be discussed towards the end of the course.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
All assessment and registration costs are included in the course fee.
What support is available?
There will be tutorials for each student per term. Periodicals may be available from your local Library Service. You may wish to get additional help and guidance offered through the free Study Support Sessions at the Macbeth Centre. At these sessions you can access the internet, work on and print homework and assignments for your course, research, access a range of software, improve your typing and practice/review what you have covered in class. You will need to book a place on these sessions – ask your tutor how. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
