This qualification is an introduction to the knowledge and understanding needed to work in a school or college environment. It can apply to the many varied roles that full and part-time support staff may fulfil including: administrative roles, site support roles, technical roles and volunteers, as well as roles that work directly with children and young people in the learning environment.
The qualification is aimed at a range of learners, mature learners, learners with special educational needs or where English is an additional language, who are thinking of working in a school or college setting.
The qualification is suitable for learners above 19years of age. Learners should have a minimum level one in literacy and numeracy or the equivalent. You should have basic computer knowledge/skill
The purpose of the qualification is to introduce learners to the knowledge required to work in the school sector in a range of support functions including administrative roles,site support roles,technical roles or working in the classroom to support children and young people. The qualification is also suitable for those looking at working as dinner ladies.
Classes will be face to face and will involve being actively involved in discussions, group work, where you will work in groups. Learners will be given topics to research and present to the whole group
To gain the maximum benefit, you should read recommended books and websites, and practice the topics covered during the class each week – the more you practice, the faster your skills will improve. Computer access is available at Study Support sessions at Macbeth centre, or at your local library.
All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods, which could include written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams, or setting up an information board. You will submit a portfolio of completed assignments, which will be marked and feedback given for each set task.
Successful learners can progress to Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools
A pen and notebook, a file folder to store handouts, and a USB key if you want to take your work home with you (your tutor can give you advice on purchasing USB keys). If you are comfortable using the Internet, there are some helpful online sites, which will be shared at the end of every session.
You may wish to get additional help and guidance offered through the free Study Support Sessions at the Macbeth Centre. At these sessions you can access the internet, work on and print homework and assignments for your course, research, access a range of software, improve your typing and practice/review what you have covered in class. You will need to book a place on these sessions – ask your tutor how. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages.
