Genre. Approaches to Writing. Who’s Story? Through whose eyes will the story be told? Theme. Past or Present? Creating characters. Plots- what do you wish to convey? Settings- this is the backdrop to which your characters interact.
Anyone 19+ wanting to write or continue a novel.
An interest in writing regularly, telling your story, and being able to create the time to write.
You will have a good understanding of the elements of novel writing, including tone, and voice. You will have created realistic characters. You will have started a first draft of your masterpiece. You will know or be thinking about your next move in developing your writing.
This course is organised over 11 weeks, meeting once a week. We always begin a lesson with an ice-breaker. We start off with encouragement through a simple exercise. Learners will be given writing exercises and prompts to assist in navigating their imagination and creativity. Power Point presentations featuring information about creative writing.
Learners are expected to create time to write regularly and will be given homework.
You will be assessed through various class work and homework activities. The tutor will assist you in setting individual learning targets at the start and will support you as you work towards them through the course.

Learners must come equipped ready to write with writing tools of their preference, i.e. note pad/pen or iPad/laptop.
Help with literacy and numeracy is available through the basic education programme. The ESOL programme offers help to speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available from the ALSS course guide and from teaching or reception staff.
