What will the course Cover?
An Introduction to Creative Writing, focusing on the structure of short story. This course will provide new and budding writers with the tools through which they can begin to create a piece of imaginative writing. It will cover writing practice, writing process and your writing mission.
Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone 19+ wanting to get that story out, and needing the guidance.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
An interest in telling your story, and being able to create the time to write.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
You will have a good understanding of Gathering, Shaping and Finishing. You will know what makes your writing good and will have started or completed a piece of work. You will know or be thinking about your next move in developing your writing.
How is the course organised?
This course is organised over 11 weeks, meeting once a week. We always begin a lesson with an ice-breaker. We start off with encouragement through a simple exercise. Learners will be given writing exercises and prompts to assist in navigating their imagination and creativity. Power Point presentations featuring information about creative writing.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
Learners are encouraged to create time to write and will be given homework.
How will my progress be assessed?
You will be assessed through various class work and homework activities. The tutor will assist you in setting individual learning targets at the start and will support you as you work towards them through the course.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
Learners must come equipped ready to write with writing tools of their preference, i.e. note pad/pen or iPad/laptop.
What support is available?
Help with literacy and numeracy is available through the basic education programme. The ESOL programme offers help to speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available from the ALSS course guide and from teaching or reception staff.
