What will the course Cover?
This course will provide you with a basic foundation in BSL. It focuses on building basic communication skills in everyday situations. It covers topics like greetings, meeting people, using numbers, describing weather and understanding simple directions.This is an accredited Entry 2 course in BSL.
Who is this course for?
This short British Sign Language Beginners course is suitable for learners who are complete beginners or who have just completed a taster course looking for an introductory course in BSL. This is an accredited course.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
No previous knowledge required.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
You will be able to receive and produce basic signs, fingerspell (the manual alphabet), and ask and answer simple questions in BSL in accordance with SEG Entry 2 Award in BSL.
How is the course organised?
The course is organised over 9 weeks meeting once a week.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
Learners are expected to consolidate their class learning and complete any set homework as advised by the tutor.
How will my progress be assessed?
You will be assessed through receptive and productive class activites in BSL in accordance with SEG Entry 2 Award in BSL.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
You can go onto the short British Sign Language Beginners (Entry 2) SEG award.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
No extra costs. Just bring a pen.
What support is available?
Help with literacy and numeracy is available through the basic education programme. The ESOL programme offers help to speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available from the ALSS course guide and from teaching or reception staff.
