This course covers the basics of the knowledge and skills required for employment opportunities in the cycle maintenance and building sector, or for personal use.
If you have a desire to become a fully qualified cycle technician working in a busy bike workshop, or just get really good foundation skills to keep your own bike working well, then this course is for you.
No formal qualifications are required for this course. However, you should have a reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy and be able to follow written and spoken instructions and take notes. A basic knowledge of cycle maintenance is helpful but not mandatory.
As a qualified cycle technician you should be able to carry out maintenance and repair activities safely, efficiently and to a high standard e.g. Repair a cycle puncture, Remove and replace a cycle rim brake assembly, Remove and replace a cycle gear assembly, Carry out a systematic cycle check.
The course will consist of theory mixed with workshop practical activities. You will cover the Level 1 Award in Cycle Maintenance and an additional unit on working safely. Lots of hands on and practical experience.
Carry out any homework tasks set by tutor, and read magazines and technical articles related to bicycle maintenance regularly.
Students’ progress will be assessed by a mixture of practical tasks, worksheets and paper-based recording forms which will build into a portfolio of evidence.
You can progress on to the Level 2 Certificate in cycle maintenance and cover more in-depth and advanced skills.
You may want to bring a note pad and pen to take personal notes. You will also need overalls or some form of alternative work wear, and suitable protective footwear (boots or similar). Please note trainers, soft shoes and sandals are NOT ALLOWED. We will supply most tools and equipment for use during the course. Please note: Any bicycles brought onto the premises and/or worked on in class are done so at the owners’ own risk.
