This course covers the range of knowledge and skills required for employment in the cycle maintenance and building sector, or to maintain your own bike in peak condition.
If you have a desire to become a fully qualified cycle technician working in a busy, modern bike workshop then this course is a great starting point.
No formal qualifications are required for this course. However, you should have a reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy and be able to follow written and spoken instructions and take notes. A basic knowledge of cycle maintenance is helpful.
You should be able to carry out maintenance and repair activities safely, efficiently and to a high standard e.g. Repair a cycle puncture, Remove and replace a cycle rim brake assembly, Remove and replace a cycle gear assembly, Carry out a systematic cycle check.
The course will consist of theory mixed with workshop practical activities. You will complete a selection of workshop health and safety and good practice units over the course.
Carry out homework assignments set by tutor, and read magazines and technical articles related to bicycle maintenance regularly.
Students’ progress will be assessed by a mixture of practical tasks, written assignments and paper-based recording forms which will build into a portfolio of evidence.
Advanced cycle technician training or trainer, team leader or workshop supervisor.
You may want to bring a note pad and writing instruments. You will also need overalls or some form of alternative work wear, i.e. coat or apron and suitable protective footwear (boots or similar). Please note trainers, soft shoes and sandals are NOT ALLOWED. We will supply most tools and equipment for use during the course. Please note: Any bicycles brought onto the premises and/or worked on in class are done so at the owners’ own risk.
