The practical content of the course covers basic servicing, including the replacement of service parts, fault investigation and diagnosis, M.O.T. inspection and preparation and minor repairs. The theory content will cover major vehicle systems like the engine, suspension and steering, tyres, brakes, electrics and how to buy secondhand cars. By the end of the course you will have gained increased knowledge and understanding of how cars work, along with specific information of how to keep your own car in good working order as well as the ‘language’ and confidence needed to deal, more successfully with mechanics and the motor trade in general.
Car owners who wish to maintain their car in a reliable and safe condition, cheaply.
No previous experience or knowledge is required apart from a keen interest and willingness to get your hands dirty whilst getting to grips with the ‘nuts and bolts’ of DIY car care.
Change a punctured tyre. Be able to interpret the markings on the sidewall of a tyre. Change engine oil and filter, and other minor service items, i.e. bulbs, wipers. Know what to do in the event of a breakdown or emergency. Be more able to identify problems before they become a problem. Top-up engine bay fluid levels and much more.
The course is organised into weekly sessions which include a mixture of practical workshop activities and demonstrations combined with individual projects. There will also be classroom based theory sessions mixed with group discussions on a variety of related subjects usually drawn from the group’s own experiences ranging from ‘cowboy’ garages, sat-navs, speed cameras, traffic wardens, parking fines, car auctions, ‘green’ cars electric and hybrids and much more.
Carry out any homework tasks given and practice what you cover in class. Reading of class handouts, weekly and or monthly magazines such as Car Mechanics, Auto Express, What Car, Used Car Buyer, Practical Classics. Doing private investigation of related topics on the internet.
Your progress will be assessed through practical workshop tasks, Q & A, observation, tutor feedback and self-assessment.
Having completed this course students may consider either doing some specific car repair courses such as Wheels & Tyres, or progress to an accredited course such as City & Guilds Automotive Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
Replacement parts for your own vehicle. (May need to discuss with tutor first). Boots, preferably but stout leather shoes are acceptable. Trainers, ‘soft’ footwear, flip-flops or sandals are not suitable. Please bring boiler suit/overalls or older comfortable clothes, notepad, pencil and pen. Please note: If an oil change on your car is planned, please bring a suitable empty container to take the old oil away with you. We have no storage for old oil.
