The course introduces dance and movement as an inclusive creative practice for working with people with disabilities. The course is taught by members of Amici Dance Theatre Company and draws on a methodology developed over 45 years by Amici’s founder and director Wolfgang Stange. Amici’s ethos is to celebrate difference and individuality and to use dance to connect and build relationships between people.
Empower is a programme of short courses aimed at those who support young people and adults with disability, specific learning difficulty, mental health and other issues.
An interest and enjoyment of dance, movement and creative arts is essential. Previous dance experience or training is NOT necessary.
By the end of the course students will have: The tools to plan and lead an inclusive dance session either with a group or for 1:1 work. The ability to use movement to engage with other people. The ability to adapt to the sensory and communication needs of different people. A greater awareness of their own physicality and creativity. An awareness of safe working practices. Experience of dance and movement to increase wellbeing and promote individual agency.
The course is taught over five weekly sessions covering: 1. Introduction to moving with others: awareness, listening and connection. 2. Responding to music and sound: the sensory landscape. 3. The importance of touch, contact and consent. 4. Working with props. 5. Dancing with people with high support needs and profound disability in creative ways.
Materials will be offered online for optional further study during the course
Progress is monitored on a continuous basis with individual goals set at the start of the course and reflection and review at the end. Verbal feedback is given throughout.
Students may: 1. Enrol in other H&F arts courses. 2. Attend other dance courses in adult education. 3. Attend other inclusive dance workshops and courses. 4. Lead inclusive dance sessions or 1:1 work in their work setting.
Suitable loose-fitting, exercise clothing to be worn. Dance shoes, barefeet, or trainers preferred for classes.
