Meet Alexia Lumley, a British Sign Language tutor at the Macbeth Centre

Alexia is one of the specialist teachers at the learning hub in Hammersmith

Deaf educator and BSL advocate Alexia Lumley is one of the top tutors at Hammersmith & Fulham's Macbeth Centre.  Alexia brings authentic lived experience and deep cultural understanding to her teaching.

About Alexia

Alexia is a BSL Deaf tutor based in London who grew up immersed in British Sign Language and Sign Supported English through her education at a Deaf school. This foundation gave her not only fluency in BSL but also a profound understanding of Deaf culture and the importance of visual communication in building connections and understanding.

Her Professional Journey

After lockdown, Alexia moved to London and began working across various educational settings, including schools, refugee hubs, hospitals, and deaf CAMHS as a BSL teacher. She also volunteers with VoluntEars, an organisation that supports Deaf people through overseas volunteering, demonstrating her commitment to the global Deaf community.

Her Teaching Story

Alexia's teaching journey began when she set up a BSL club at a mainstream primary school to teach students basic signs. She quickly realised how much she loved teaching and that it was her true calling. This passion led her to study Sign Language Teacher Training (STTC) at City Lit, which has further shaped and strengthened her professional career.

Her Teaching Style

Alexia's approach is interactive, visual, engaging, and encouraging – with a sense of humour! She loves seeing students start with little or no knowledge and grow in confidence as they learn to sign and communicate. She finds it incredibly rewarding to watch learners discover this unique, visual language that isn't based on sound like spoken languages.

Her Passion for Inclusivity

Alexia is deeply passionate about inclusivity and diversity in education. Her sister, Saskia Lumley, created a powerful documentary that highlights the Deaf community, the challenges they face, and the importance of inclusivity – causes that are close to Alexia's heart.

Current Teaching and Future Impact

Alexia teaches Introduction to BSL, and BSL Level 1 at the Macbeth Centre. Through her teaching, she continues to bridge the gap between hearing and Deaf communities, helping students discover the beauty and richness of visual communication whilst fostering greater understanding and inclusivity in our diverse society.
