Meet Paul Redfern, a History tutor at the Macbeth Centre
Paul is one of the specialist teachers at the learning hub in Hammersmith
Multi-disciplinary educator and creative teacher Paul Redfern is one of the top tutors at Hammersmith & Fulham's Macbeth Centre. With degrees from Oxford, University of British Columbia, and London School of Economics spanning geography, economics, sociology, philosophy, and theology, Paul brings a unique interdisciplinary approach to his teaching.
About Paul
Paul describes himself as a "jack of all trades, master of none," with a remarkably diverse career spanning academia, consultancy, music, and education. His Ph.D. from the London School of Economics focused on gentrification studies, while his professional experience includes work as a United Nations human rights consultant and running a successful data analysis consultancy for clients like MORI and the British Council.
Musical Background
Beyond academia, Paul developed a vibrant second career as a musician, performing with an all-female ukulele punk band at major music festivals across the country. He now channels this musical passion into community work, providing ukulele classes for Mind (the mental health charity) and offering private music instruction.
Teaching Philosophy
Paul's teaching style is "relaxed, engaging - and often irreverent." His greatest satisfaction comes from witnessing "that moment when you see the light of discovery in a student's eyes" when connections are made between seemingly unrelated topics. Influenced by sociologist Robert Ezra Park, economist Luigi Ludovico Pasinetti, and cultural theorist Raymond Williams, Paul believes in the interconnectedness of knowledge across disciplines.
Current Teaching
Paul currently teaches History, focusing on "Famous Figures in European History from the 16th & 17th centuries." True to his diverse interests, he'd still love to develop ukulele classes, as he "originally came to the Macbeth Centre to teach ukulele."
