We’re proud to share that Iryna Hura, one of our dedicated English language tutors at the Macbeth Centre, has been named Inspirational Teacher of the Year at the Mayor of London Adult Learning Awards on Thursday 13 November.
Iryna’s journey is extraordinary. Originally from Kyiv, she and her family fled Ukraine when war broke out. “Starting again in a new country is incredibly hard,” says Iryna. “You leave everything behind and begin from zero.”
Her experience inspired her to support others in similar situations. After arriving in the UK in 2023, Iryna trained in teaching English to refugees and asylum seekers and now leads trauma-informed CPD classes at the Macbeth Centre. These courses help learners not only improve their language skills but also rebuild confidence and navigate everyday life – from speaking to a child’s school to booking a GP appointment.
“I understand the challenges my students face because I’ve lived them,” Iryna explains. “Language is more than words – it’s a lifeline.”
Iryna’s compassionate approach has transformed the classroom into a safe space for learners who have fled conflict. Her work shows the power of adult education in creating new beginnings.
The awards also recognised Dean Mcneish, a valued member of our support team, who was highly commended as an Inspirational Professional in Adult Education. Dean’s resilience and commitment to learners are an inspiration to us all.
Dean has overcome many challenges since losing his leg several years ago. He said the award meant a great deal to him:
“I feel very honoured to receive this award. After my amputation, I was determined not to let it change who I am. I just have to do things differently. Winning the award keeps me motivated."
Congratulations to Iryna and Dean! Their achievements reflect our mission: helping every learner overcome challenges and thrive.

H&F Mayor Sharon Holder praised both award winners and the centre's wider positive impact in the community. She said:
"I'm incredibly proud of Iryna and Dean for the well-deserved recognition. Their dedication demonstrates the power and impact of adult education. They're helping our residents overcome challenges, build new lives and find confidence and community – all part of making H&F a stronger, safer, kinder borough."
